Kivuthi Mbuno
Kivuthi Mbuno was born in 1947 in Kenya.
In his early life, Kivuthi Mbuno worked as a chef on safaris, which let him travel around Kenya and into Tanzania. This was how he became to know about nature and its wild fauna which marked him deeply. In 1976 He moved to Langata, Kenya. From then on he devoted himself exclusively to drawing.
Self taught artist Kivuthi Mbuno’s drawings on paper, made in a precise drawing style and in vivid colours, depict the African as an ape living in the jungle. This bizarre interpretation of nature, man and animal is his vocabulary which has not changed since he started to make art.
Since the early 1990s Kivuthi Mbuno participated in major group exhibitions, including Africa Now, Saatchi Gallery, London (1990) and Africa Explores: 20th Century African Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York (1991).
