Peter Martin (1959 – 2005)
Peter Martin Chauganga was born in 1959 in the village of Kwamdorwa, in the Korogwe District of the Tanga Region, Tanzania.
In 1971 Peter Martin who is of Myao tribe origin left his village to look for work in the town of Tanga, where he met the painter Damian Msagula. Peter Martin became one of Damian Msagula's first students in 1971 and in 1974 he started painting on his own.
Peter Martin is, like John Kilaka with his affectionately naive stile, but also strongly naturalistic depictions of village life in the tradition of the Tinga-Tinga-painting of Tanzania, which is one of the most important art movements of the black continent.
Peter Martin's art work can be found in numerous private collections and in various publications.
