Paa Joe
Paa Joe was born in 1947 in the region of Akwapim, Ghana.
Now the foremost maker of figural coffins, Paa Joe did his apprenticeship with Kane Kwei in Teshie, Ghana, whose fantastic custom-built coffins in the shape of giant vegetables, birds or luxury cars became favourites of Western collectors in the 1980’s.
Paa Joe left his master 1974. In 1976 he opened his own workshop in Nungua, Ghana.
In 2007, he opened a new workshop in Pobiman near Accra, Ghana.
Paa Joe has participated in major group exhibitions, including Les Magiciens de la terre (1989) in Paris and Six Feet Under (2006-2008) in Berne and Dresden and is represented in many museums and public galleries.
Paa Joe lives and works in Pobiman near Accra, Ghana.
