Unworldly innocence

Roland Nickel is on show in the Galerie am Theater - Puzzle games in pictures

One of the ''Puzzle-Works'' by Roland Nickel.

South Sea atmosphere in Fürth’s city: Galerie am Theater presents with Roland Nickel a painter, whose 'unworldliness' comes into play in colour and refreshingly cheerful motifes.

At the first glance that does not deal with the subject and saying, you have got, because of the extremely safe and sensitively placed colours, an impression that is by closer examination confirmed even more: no alternative in the modern sense, no cutting off in one and the same direction, that is not an escape from himself and the oh so cruel environment, but as giving beautiful rest areas, rest breaks, a colourful drive, looked at naively, straightforward and complex.

The lively and colorful picture as a playing field for real and non-tangible, the image as a counterpart to the environment. Roland Nickel presents his work as puzzles, hidden faces in landscapes, human bodies painted with animal heads, mythical creatures in impossible places. In his pictures you have to surch, but not frantically for constructive criticism of life, but just the opposite: for moments, characters and actions that anyone would be able to experience.

We enjoy accompanying Nickel on his 'walk through the Vienna Woods' and then have to sum up, it was funny and instructive to see the world from a different perspective. And if he now makes realistic paintings in blurred watercolours, but veiled by clear contours and boundaries or whether he provides old standard lamps from the 50s with mop-like wool tufts and all of this as green, yellow, blue or pink palms declared, one thing applies to all his work: this is also one kind of critic – and possibly the most effective.
