THE EXHIBITION "Eroticism in Contemporary African Art" in Fürth’s ZAK Gallery takes the viewer into the colourful world of Africa. The paintings and sculptures of famous African artists such as George Lilanga and Chéri Samba tell a different story, which thematises the negative aspects of the topic love and eroticism, especially the omnipresent threat of AIDS, exploitation and prostitution. To escape confiscation by the customs, the artists Peter Martin and John Kilaka were forced to paste their works over. It was only when they arrived here in the gallery, as by the gallerists-couple Hammond reported, the with innocuous scenes painted newspaper pages could be removed from the base with the help of water. What came to light, were images, which couldn't be exported, because they contain very clearly love scenes.
Twins Seven Seven, the great African artist created the series "African Kama Sutra" with which he celebrates eroticism in Africa as one abundant feast for the senses. Chéri Samba and Moke, the great exponents of the "school of Kinshasa" however visualise eroticism as a hunt for quick sex, which determines life in African cities in the meanwhile as much as the increasing prostitution.
