An engine of the scene

The Galerie am Theater celebrates its 10th anniversary in the shadow of the annual fair (Kirchweih)

In the thick of the fray of the amusement fair Kirchweih the Galerie am Theater celebrates its tenth anniversary. Used to rough conditions, its owners are not disturbed by the bustling rivalry of the amusement fair, but rather undauntedly stand up to the hubbub with bold paintings, striking music and an own stall.

After the jazz musicians including bassist Willi Lichtenberg and the comedians "Weber & Schuster", who defied the cold in the backyard on Saturday, played yesterday the “Neuen Pegnitzschäfer” with classical music against the infernal noise of the street festival. The audience was as distinguished as the program of works by Hindemith and Hashagen.

The artist Renate Höllerer-Hammond served a huge anniversary cake in the design of her grotesque paintings to the visitors of the private view. In comparison to her last exhibition her powerful paintings have gained even more in bite. Mountains of meat in all situations are leading prosperity into absurdum. These paintings live by their exaggeration as well as by their bold colours. The bizarre panopticon of abundance is completed by Peter Hammer’s automated art objects that already created a sensation at the Nuremberg art fair "ART IV". George Fiederer’s approaches graphically the social critical matter of this remarkable group exhibition that gives powerful impetus, which not to have happened for a long time.

It also stands for an undiminished commitment of the gallery for creative new developments. Recently it was the Hundertwasser student Julius Ehrhart who provided a breath of fresh air and for the future, there are big plans ahead. So is for next year, a nationwide competition planed for all divisions of Fine Art to the theme “Spiel-Raum”. The exhibition aims to help explore the terrain between liberty and coercion of the arts.

Caught between talent pool and established art podium the Galerie am Theater has promoted many emerging artists in the region. There fore their beginnings in combination with antiques were still pretty naive. It took seven years until the institution was established. The local communal support encouraged gallery owner John Hammond in his fight against an art abolishing climate. The ten-year survival can’t be celebrated enough. It will continue next Sunday with performances by tuba-artist Joachim Sordel. Showcased in front of the gallery until 11 October are sculptures by Markus Kuhn, the Stoychevi brothers and "Eat Art" from the kitchen of Ursula Zabert-Grosjean.
